Why?

<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
This lesson aims to enhance students' understanding of international customs and cultural etiquette, critical for navigating both business and personal interactions globally. By interacting with an AI chatbot, students will engage in active learning, applying technology to real-world scenarios to develop empathy and global awareness. The project encourages critical thinking and communication skills as students research, role-play, and present their findings.

Materials NeededTime needed
- Student Handouts: Outlining the project, questions to ask, and sections to complete for their presentation.
  • Computers/Tablets: Each group needs one device with internet access to interact with the AI chatbot.Paper and writing utensils | | | Approximately 60 to 120 minutes, adjusted for how in-depth you would like to have students go in research and role-playing with AI. | | | | Objectives | | | | | | | * Students will be able to independently research business and personal customs of a specific country using an AI chatbot.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze and compare international customs, identifying potential cultural misunderstandings.
  • Students will be able to synthesize information from various interactions into a coherent presentation that highlights cultural dos and don’ts. | | | | | | | Key Concepts & Vocabulary  | | | | | | | Cultural Etiquette: The customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.Business Protocol: Accepted code of conduct in business affairs concerning meetings, negotiations, correspondence, and dealings.Social Customs: Traditional practices and moral and social conduct observed by individuals in personal interactions.Taboo: A social or religious custom prohibiting or restricting a particular practice or discouraging specific types of actions or associations. | | | | | | | Lesson   | | | | | | | Preparation Phase: Separate the class into small groups of about three students. Each group of students is assigned a different country. They are given basic information and are tasked with coming up with a list of situations they might encounter both in business settings and in personal interactions while traveling.Research and Interaction Phase: Business Interactions: Students interact with the chatbot to ask specific questions about business etiquette in their assigned country. For example, how to greet a business partner, appropriate conversation topics, employer-employee conversation styles, etc.Personal Interactions: Students then switch to personal travel scenarios such as dining out, attending public events, or meeting new people. They will inquire about appropriate behavior, dress codes, tipping etiquette, and more.Provide each group with the Handout that guides them with types of questions to ask the chatbot.AI Role-play and Scenarios: Using the information gathered, students role-play various scenarios using the chatbot as an interactive guide and critic. The chatbot assesses their responses and guides them on improving or explaining why certain actions may be seen as inappropriate based on cultural norms.Presentation and Reflection Phase: Each group presents information they learned, providing details about the business and personal customs of their assigned country, supported by specific dialogues and interactions with the chatbot. They present their findings to the class, providing insights into the cultural dos and don’ts. | | | | | | | Discussion Questions | | | | | | | - What were some of the most surprising business or social customs you learned about from another group’s presentation? How do they differ from what we might do in our own culture?
  • Why is it important to be aware of and respect business and social customs when visiting another country? Can you think of a scenario where not knowing the local customs could lead to a misunderstanding?
  • How could misunderstanding a cultural norm affect a business deal or a personal interaction in a negative way? Can anyone give an example from the presentations that illustrated this kind of challenge?
  • How did using the AI chatbot enhance your learning about cultural etiquette? Do you think it gave you a better understanding than just reading about these customs?
  • What improvements would you suggest for making the AI chatbot even more helpful in future projects? Was there anything about the interaction that you found particularly useful or particularly challenging? | | | | | | | Supplemental Activity Ideas  | | | | | | | Cultural Idioms and Phrases: Students research idioms, phrases, and proverbs from their assigned country and create a booklet or a digital slideshow explaining what they mean and how they reflect the local culture.Cultural Art Creation: Students create artworks inspired by the traditional styles of the country they researched, such as Japanese origami, Indian rangoli, or Aboriginal dot painting.National Symbols and their Meanings: Students explore and create a visual representation of national symbols (like flags, national animals, or traditional dress) and their meanings.Travel Blog: Students could use blog platforms to create an interactive travel diary for their country, incorporating multimedia elements like photos, videos, and audio to showcase what they've learned about the culture and etiquette. Students could use AI image generators to create images for these entries. | | | | | |
