The plan

Why?

<!-- /wp:heading -->
In this lesson, students will utilize ChatGPT or a similar generative AI to create case studies, practicing using analytical and critical thinking skills on AI-generated content. This activity will help students understand the capabilities and limitations of AI in generating complex, context-driven scenarios. It emphasizes the importance of human oversight in interpreting and evaluating information produced by AI technologies.

Materials NeededTime needed
- Computers or tablets with internet access
  • Access to ChatGPT or another generative AI platform
  • Notebooks or digital tools for note-taking | | | Approximately two class periods of 45 minutes each | | | | Objectives | | | | | | | Students will be able to…- Generate case studies using AI.
  • Critically analyze and interpret AI-generated content.
  • Identify the benefits and limitations of using AI in academic research.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge to real-world-like scenarios created by AI. | | | | | | | Lesson   | | | | | | | 1. Introduction to AI and its Capabilities: Begin with a brief discussion about what AI is and how it can be used to generate information.
  1. Connect to previous instruction: Review with the class about the information that has been covered in recent class periods. Explain why you want the students to use case studies as a way of exploring ideas in greater depth.Below are some example situations in which this lesson might be used. Tailor the lesson to your own needs for whatever class you are teaching.

    1. Science: To explore real-world applications of scientific theories, such as the impact of invasive species on local ecosystems.
    2. Math: To apply mathematical concepts to practical situations, like using statistics to analyze trends in climate data.
    3. Social Studies: To deepen understanding of historical events through personal narratives, like examining individual experiences during the Great Depression.
    4. English Language Arts: To enhance literary analysis skills by exploring character development and theme in a novel through detailed case studies.
    5. Health Education: To investigate the effects of lifestyle choices on health by studying detailed scenarios involving nutrition and exercise.
    6. Art: To understand the influence of historical and cultural context on artists by examining their lives and works as case studies.
    7. Technology: To demonstrate the real-world impact of technological advancements, like the use of drones in agriculture.
    8. Music: To analyze the development of musical styles and genres by studying the careers and innovations of influential composers and musicians.
    9. Physical Education: To study the psychological and physical impact of sports on individuals through case studies of athletes' training and performance.
  2. Setup and Instructions: Explain how to use ChatGPT or the chosen AI tool to generate case studies. Discuss the objectives and expectations of the activity.Sample prompt: “Create a detailed case study related to> Shortcode [insert specific topic here]that includes background information, a description of key issues or events, the main individuals or groups involved, and the impacts or outcomes observed. The target grade for this case study is> Shortcode [insert grade level].”

  3. Generating Case Studies: In groups, students use AI to generate case studies based on predetermined topics or subjects relevant to their curriculum. Each group will likely have somewhat of a different case study, which is great for this purpose. Each group will have their own process of discovery, and then they can share with each other in a future class period.

  4. Group Analysis: In groups, students analyze the AI-generated case studies, noting interesting points, inconsistencies, or areas requiring deeper investigation. Students use the case study along with material from your course to come up with conclusions and reflections.

  5. Group Presentations: (Second class period) Each group presents their case study and analysis to the class, highlighting key insights and challenges encountered. Students may take the opportunity to ask questions of other groups as they present.

  6. Wrap-Up: Summarize the day’s findings and reinforce the learning objectives. | | | | | | | Discussion Questions | | | | | | | - What did you find most surprising about the AI-generated case study?

  • How did the AI handle the complexity of the topic?Where did you see limitations in the information provided by AI?
  • How does using AI for generating case studies change your role as a student/researcher?
  • What skills did you use today that you think are most important when working with AI-generated content?
  • How could AI-generated case studies be used effectively in other subjects?
  • What ethical considerations do we need to keep in mind when using AI in education?
  • What did you learn in a new way due to the case studies presented? | | | | | | | Supplemental Activity Ideas  | | | | | | | Comparative Analysis: Have students compare an AI-generated case study with one created by humans, or an actual historical event, to spot differences in depth, empathy, and detail.Role-Play Debate: Organize a debate where students argue the pros and cons of using AI to generate academic content.Creative Writing: Students use AI to generate a story or scenario, then write a critical analysis or continuation of the narrative.Technology and Ethics Panel: Host a discussion or panel about the ethical implications of AI in society, focusing on scenarios from the AI-generated case studies. | | | | | | | Sources to Learn More | | | | | | | Tips to create better case studies using AI (an article that was probably written by ChatGPT) - https://www.toolify.ai/ai-news/effortlessly-generate-engaging-case-studies-with-chatgpt-1111709 | | | | | |
