The plan
Why?
<!-- /wp:heading -->| This lesson uses AI image generators to transform abstract vocabulary learning into a dynamic visual experience, building deeper understanding and retention among students. By integrating technology and creativity, it encourages students to think critically about language and its visual representation, preparing them for a digital future where such skills are increasingly vital. The collaborative and reflective elements of the lesson promote ethical digital literacy, teamwork, and the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated content, equipping students with essential 21st-century skills. |
| Materials Needed | Time needed | ||||
| - Computers or tablets with internet access |
- Access to an AI image generator platform (ensure it's suitable for educational use and age-appropriate)
- List of subject-specific vocabulary words | | | Approximately 30 to 45 minutes | | | | Objectives | | | | | | | Students will be able to accurately define and use subject-specific vocabulary in appropriate contexts.Students will be able to effectively utilize AI image generation tools to create visual representations of vocabulary words.Students will be able to engage in creative thinking to conceptualize how abstract vocabulary words can be visually represented. | | | | | | | Key Concepts & Vocabulary | | | | | | | AI Image Generator: A tool or software powered by artificial intelligence that can create or manipulate images based on textual descriptions or other forms of input. | | | | | | | Lesson | | | | | | | This lesson can be used for any class in which there are words to remember. This could happen in any subject area – scientific or mathematical terms, historical designations, language arts vocabulary, etc. - Start with a discussion about how visual imagery can help with memory and understanding. Ask students if they've ever used drawings or images to remember something.
- Briefly explain what AI image generators are and how they can create images based on text descriptions. (See some links in the Sources section at bottom of lesson plan)
- Divide the class into pairs (or they can work individually). Each pair gets a set of vocabulary words related to the current subject area being studied.
- Each group researches their assigned words and writes down definitions or explanations in their own words. Encourage them to think about how they might visually represent these concepts.
- Demonstrate how to use the AI image generator by inputting a simple example related to the subject area. Show students how they can modify their descriptions to alter the resulting image.
- Students work individually or in pairs to come up with creative descriptions for their vocabulary words. They then input these descriptions into the AI image generator to create illustrations.
- After creating their images, students discuss how the illustrations help convey the meaning of the words. They can also consider the limitations of using AI for this purpose.
- Organize a “gallery walk” where students can view the vocabulary illustrations created by their peers. This can be done digitally through a shared online platform or by displaying the images around the classroom. | | | | | | | Discussion Questions | | | | | | | * How did creating an image for a vocabulary word change your understanding of the word? Can you share an example where the image significantly enhanced your comprehension?
- Were there any words that were particularly challenging to illustrate with the AI? Why do you think that was?
- How did you decide what descriptions to input into the AI generator for your words? Did you have to change your descriptions based on the initial images you received?
- In what ways did the AI-generated images meet or not meet your expectations? Can you think of any reasons for this?
- How do we ensure that the use of AI in education is fair, unbiased, and respectful of diverse perspectives?
- After participating in this activity, how do you view the role of creativity in learning? Do you think creativity is more often expressed by the student, the AI, or both? | | | | | | | Supplemental Activity Ideas | | | | | | | Creative Writing: Students select one of their vocabulary words and write a short story or explanation incorporating the AI-generated illustration.Illustration****Compilations: Students can be encouraged to explore other subject areas and create a personal vocabulary illustration journal. | | | | | | | Sources to Learn More | | | | | | | Preview and familiarize yourself with AI image generator tools to ensure they are suitable and safe for student use.
