Professional Development in the Age of AI
<!-- /wp:heading -->Professional development has always been a critical component of teachers' careers by providing opportunities to stay informed on educational theories and best practices. Unfortunately, PD often feel tedious, inconvenient and irrelevant.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->However, as technology continues to evolve, quality PD will be required in order for teachers to stay up to date on the key issues and opportunities and integrate to use of new technologies into their teaching practice. It is our hope that schools and districts will recognize this imperative and provide these opportunities to teachers.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->In this lesson, we’ll talk more about the need for opportunities to continue learning and growing as AI’s impact on education continues to grow. We’ll also explore ways that new AI technologies and tools can themselves create more PD opportunities for teachers to grow in their profession outside of formal workshops and trainings.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->The Importance of Continued Adaptation and Growth
<!-- /wp:heading -->As we’ve discussed throughout this course, the capabilities of AI can open up a wealth of opportunities to update how and what we teach, as well as a number of important concerns about ethics, academic integrity, and the future of work.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->In order to maximize the potential of technology in their teaching and adequately prepare students for the future, educators must remain up to date with technological advancements. Additionally, they should stay informed about ethical standards, privacy concerns, and security measures to prevent any potential problems that could exacerbate the digital divide among their students. Some ways to help mitigate the issues brought about by rapid technological advancement include:
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- Recognize and be prepared for the fact that you will likely have to make changes during the school year rather than wait until the summer to integrate a new tool or adapt an assignment to avoid plagiarism.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Prioritize thinking about how you can continuously learn, whether through formal opportunities like courses and conferences or informal ones like webinars and books.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Regularly reflect on your teaching experience and seek feedback from peers and students to collaborate on new developments, best practices, and tips and tricks that can be shared together.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Be open to experimenting with new approaches and tools and learn from successes and failures in order the better understand what your teaching styles will be in the age of artificial intelligence.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Advocate for your school to provide the necessary training, allocate funds, and provide support for teachers to be equipped to be prepared to take on these new challenges and use new technologies effectively.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Take care of yourself! Remember that artificial intelligence should begin to make our lives easier, not harder. Prioritize self-care and remember that everyone is adapting to the new changes too. The key is to keep learning, innovating, and adapting to ensure you become the best practitioner you can be. <!-- /wp:list-item -->
All of these things can help teachers form the right habits and mindsets to survive and thrive during the age of artificial intelligence. This continued advancement also has the benefits of modeling the growth mindset you want to instill in your students, learning to see change as an opportunity for growth, and anticipating obstacles that may arise during the school year.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->AI Competencies to Continue Developing
<!-- /wp:heading -->While this course aims to serve as a primer for teachers to form core competencies, further development will be needed based on the needs of your schools and students, as well as to further explore the areas that most interest you. Some core competencies to keep in mind are:
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- AI Basics: Teachers will need to retain the foundational information about AI technology, such as machine learning, natural language processing, and neural networks
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Data literacy: Data will increasingly play a larger role in how we think about education, and the ability to navigate and make sense of analytics that AI systems generate will be a necessary skill set.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Ethical considerations: As the integration of AI continues, new ethical considerations may become apparent that will require educators to think critically about and navigate
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Pedagogical integration: The ability to effectively incorporate new AI tools into teaching practices and strategies will ensure the effort is well-spent.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> AI Tool Evaluation: New AI tools are coming out every day, and teachers will need to be able to sort through the noise to evaluate them for relevance, efficacy, and alignment with their own objectives.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Communication: As teachers incorporate AI into their instructional practice, they will need to communicate with parents and administrators about the changes they are making.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Technical Proficiency: Teachers will be the first technical support line for many students, and the more digitally literate they are, the more they can support their students. <!-- /wp:list-item -->
Some methods of professional development you may consider for building the competencies mentioned here include:
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- Events: Workshops, webinars, and conferences offer a great way for teachers to quickly see what is new and gain actionable insight.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Courses: Online courses, in-person classes, and MOOCs on AI & education and even just AI can help teachers build a robust foundation of knowledge
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Reading: Subscribing to newsletters, blogs, and journals will allow teachers to gain bite-sized information about AI as it comes out
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Networking: Connecting with other educators on social media, forums, and in-person seminars will provide opportunities to exchange ideas and learn from other teachers <!-- /wp:list-item -->
While these suggestions are not unique to AI, they can remind teachers of the resources available to navigate these new changes.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->We offer many of these resources on our website (pedagogyfutures.io), including a weekly newsletter, virtual and in-person workshops, and a forum for teachers to exchange ideas. We also regularly share resources for teachers to engage in professional development on our social media channels (@pedagogycloud on instagram)!
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->Leveraging AI for Personal and Professional Development
<!-- /wp:heading -->Throughout the course, we have included examples of how students and educators can use AI to enhance learning. Many of those same tactics and tools can be used by teachers themselves to direct their own learning.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->AI tools present an excellent opportunity for educators to discover customized learning materials and lessons tailored to their individual interests, strengths, and areas requiring improvement. For instance, you can input feedback that you received on a recent performance review and ask AI to suggest ways to improve any areas of weakness.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->These same tools can also assist in evaluating teaching practices, proposing innovative strategies, and offering feedback on written work. Integrating AI tools into your learning journey will enhance your ability to support students on their own educational paths.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->As AI tools continue to advance, they will be capable of providing feedback based on classroom interactions, simulating teaching scenarios in virtual reality classrooms, and suggesting adjustments based on your unique teaching style. You will have the option to record your classes and submit them for analysis to an AI tool or employ a virtual coach for personalized guidance, support, and mentorship.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->In the meantime, rely on your own insights and external feedback to locate appropriate resources and devise a plan for professional growth as an educator.

Conclusion
<!-- /wp:heading -->As we move further into the age of AI, the importance of teacher professional development will only grow. The speed at which the technology is developing will require an equally rapid response of new trainings and resources. As we’ve discussed here, schools and districts will have a huge responsibility in making sure these resources are made available to their teachers.
