<!-- /wp:accordion-heading -->Concept Explanation
<!-- /wp:heading -->Some people use AI as if it is a super sophisticated spell-check, having their words improved as they go. Some use it like a servant, having it do their work for them. Collaborative writing with AI falls somewhere in between. It merges the analytical power of machines with the creative expression of humans, resulting in content that’s both innovative and accurate. This lesson goes in-depth with a variety of ways in which AI can be incorporated into various stages of the writing process, especially once they start putting paragraphs on paper.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->Here are some of the key benefits of AI:
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- Increasing efficiency: AI can streamline many aspects of the writing process, from research to grammar checks, allowing students to focus more on content.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Ensuring accuracy: While humans can miss or overlook errors, AI can help keep things accurate, especially during research.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Inspiring innovation: By suggesting ideas or perspectives that might not immediately occur to human writers, AI tools can push students to think outside the box. <!-- /wp:list-item -->
The future workforce will be hybrid, with humans and AI collaborating. Early exposure prepares students for this reality. Here are some real-world examples of AI being used every day in various fields to help write:
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- Major publishers like Reuters use AI for help in reporting. Here, speed and accuracy are both essential, and AI delivers on both fronts.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> In marketing, AI tools help gather information, analyze data, and even draft initial content. Human marketers then refine all of that information for nuance and emotional impact, ensuring the final output resonates with human audiences.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> In human resources, AI is improving how companies find talent. AI helps them hire more efficiently, in methods such as AI that helps prioritize applicants and systems that analyze interviews to give real-time feedback.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> The field of healthcare is innovating with AI in ways that improve health outcomes for everyone. AI’s speed and accuracy help medical professionals to identify risk factors, catch diseases early, tailor care to individuals, and perform safer surgeries. <!-- /wp:list-item -->
Students get a significant benefit for potential future careers by learning how to work with AI now. A 2025 study indicated that students using AI-enhanced tools exhibited significant academic growth over time. This suggests that repeated exposure to well-structured AI suggestions can be a major positive in education. Collaborative writing with AI offers students several specific benefits, perhaps none more significant than teaching them to be discerning. They must evaluate AI suggestions, deciding what fits and what feels inauthentic or off-base. This constant evaluation sharpens their critical thinking and judgment skills.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->Note: We don’t advocate for AI to be included or required in every writing assignment. It’s still important for students to build skills independently before incorporating AI. However, we believe that when used strategically, AI can be a valuable tool for enhancing collaborative writing, offering new avenues for idea generation, feedback, and refinement.

Application
<!-- /wp:heading -->To truly grasp the potential of AI in writing, imagine how AI can be used throughout the writing stages. Each stage offers a unique collaboration opportunity, enhancing the final product without diminishing the student's creative control. We already covered brainstorming and outlining, and these ideas explore AI’s usefulness in other stages of the writing process.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- Researching: Beyond just sourcing relevant materials, tools like Jenni and AnswerThis assist with researching and writing tasks such as finding and managing citations. As students write, these apps can help them stay on-topic and pull in additional source information as needed. Make sure they always double-check the AI’s work to verify that it is true to the source!
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Data Analysis: A common job function in the AI era, data analysis can be helped by AI tools such as Julius AI, which help people visualize data using language, so even people without coding skills can understand it. This can be a big benefit when writers try to incorporate numbers into their analysis.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Paraphrasing: Quillbot, which has been mentioned several times in the course already, performs numerous functions related to writing, one of which is paraphrasing. This tool helps writers rephrase text while maintaining its original meaning, which can be useful for avoiding plagiarism, simplifying complex language, or varying sentence structure.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Summarizing: ChatPDF summarizes long articles. With human prompts, it highlights key points and findings, saving researchers immense time and ensuring they don't miss out on essential information. This makes for more efficiency when including outside material in writing. <!-- /wp:list-item -->
Imagine how AI can be used in other parts of the writing process, such as strengthening the argument and addressing counterarguments.
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- AI for Strengthening Arguments: Chatbots can point out weak reasoning, vague claims, or places where evidence could be expanded. These will help students fortify their arguments. Teachers can guide students to use AI as a feedback partner rather than a replacement for their own critical thinking. Try prompts such as, “Help me identify which of my arguments are weakest and suggest how to improve them.” or “What kind of evidence could make this claim stronger?”
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> AI for Counterarguments: AI can generate possible objections or opposing perspectives that students might not anticipate on their own, strengthening their critical thinking and argumentative depth. This helps students practice anticipating reader concerns and responding effectively. Try prompts such as, “What are three possible counterarguments to my position?” or “How might someone who disagrees with me respond to this point?”
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Summarizing and simplifying: Each counterargument is really its own argument. It can be difficult to explain a counterargument briefly, and a writer risks weakening their overall argument if they fail to address it sufficiently. AI tools can help writers summarize and simplify counterarguments, making complex ideas more accessible and concise.Try prompts such as, “Summarize this counterargument in one concise sentence,” or “Explain the opposing view simply and clearly, avoiding jargon,” or “Help me condense this section on the counterargument without losing the main point.” <!-- /wp:list-item -->

Analysis
<!-- /wp:heading -->Peer editing is a valuable step in the writing process, and AI can help there as well. The goal of peer review is refining ideas and arguments, not just catching typos. AI can revolutionize this stage, making it more substantive. Consider these ways in which AI can be a review partner for students who have a completed draft:
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->- Depth Over Surface: With AI handling grammar, punctuation, and even style, peer review can move deeper. Students can critique argument strength, logical flow, or evidence relevance, rather than getting bogged down by superficial errors.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Instant Feedback: AI can provide real-time advice. For students, this means the ability to adapt their writing quickly, refining their work in stages rather than waiting for one major review.
- <!-- /wp:list-item --> Bias and Neutrality: A significant advantage of AI is its neutrality. Unlike human peers, who might be influenced by personal biases or emotions, AI evaluates writing based on set parameters, ensuring objective feedback. <!-- /wp:list-item -->
The integration of AI in the review process might raise some concerns. For instance, could we risk curtailing creativity, with everyone aligning too closely with what the AI deems “correct”? Or, could over-reliance on AI for grammar and style checks lead to students neglecting to develop these foundational skills themselves?
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->Look over the lists of real-world examples and classroom applications mentioned previously, and ask yourself: How comfortable are you with these uses of AI? Does anything concern you regarding how AI is already being used? Could you imagine AI being used in additional ways?
